What is Beauty?

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

We live in a society where perceptions of beauty and what's beautiful have become limited to what is simply pleasing to the eye. It's a 'look', it's a trend, a label, the size on a label, it's a product. I look around and see everyone starting to look the same, and it's scary, why do they all want a straight pointy nose and high cheekbones? Who made that the law? I happen to like my short nose and chubby cheeks, am I not beautiful? As much as I absolutely love getting dressed up, putting makeup on, buying it and blogging about it, it's not what defines me, it's not what makes my life beautiful. Beauty to me is not an item.

I've learned that life is beautiful when I take a moment to appreciate the simple things, like getting out of the shower after a long day, throwing on a gray t shirt and making myself a cup of tea. It's seeing my newborn nephew's tiny lips curled up together as he sleeps, it's watching my grandmother help give him a bath knowing that those old wrinkled hands have bathed his mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

The most beautiful things I have ever seen are not in a magazine, it's when I get off a five hour red eye flight, clear customs struggling with my luggage and see my niece waiting bright eyed clutching her favorite teddy bear, smiling and saying, "Aunteeee". The most beautiful feeling I have ever felt is not owning expensive things, it's smelling the one I love as my head is on his chest while we watch tv, knowing that the next week we're going to be two thousand miles apart again. Beauty has been so commercialized, we're blinded as to what it truly beautiful. Beauty is in the little things, the things we ignore everyday, the moments we take for granted. Beauty is not simply what we see, beauty is what touches our soul.
